Moors Valley golf course
Welcome to Moors Valley, a Course with all the character and reputation expected of a top quality course, having been skilfully designed by the renowned architect, Martin Hawtree. It acknowledges the traditions of the game – a far cry from today’s target-golf resorts! Laid down on what was ancient Dorset heathland, the rolling terrain leads through dog-legs to generous well-protected greens that are set against the pine trees of Ringwood Forest. A quite stunning environment! Gorse is now a greater feature than heather but it adds, through its yellow flowers that seem to be in bloom throughout the playing season, a distinctive beauty of its own. Bracken and small copses of birches abound, as do oaks, pine trees and areas of wet meadow. The Moors River divides the course as it meanders between the Crane and Moors Lakes. It’s not surprising that with such features our quiet secluded setting is a safe haven for an abundance of birds and wildlife. A Short course, practice nets, bunker, chipping green and 2 putting greens complement the Course; and the Golf Shop, Spikes Bar and Seasons Restaurant complete the golf complex.
The Course measures some 6330 yards off the back-medal tees (Par 72), and varies in length through the 4 sets of tees to just under 4900 yards. Length isn’t everything with play from the back or forward tees providing an equally enjoyable and interesting challenge for all. The holes have their own individual identity making considered club selection off the tee a pre-requisite if you are to minimise the difficulty of the next stroke. Second-shots need to be true and accurate if you decide to take on the greens, which are defined against a backdrop of trees. Three of the four one-shot holes are over 180 yards long and require careful club choice depending on the wind direction. Fairway bunkers govern the play of a hole, with extra hazards and ditches laying hidden to collect stray shots. Greenside bunkering is precise, demanding a well judged approach shot to position the ball close to the flag pin. The greens are our most intensively managed area, recognising that around 40% of all shots take place on these vital surfaces –– indeed it is where games are won or lost! Just as you turn for home, the closing holes kick in with a stiff challenge that requires your full concentration. All in all, the course design rewards the golfer who succeeds in taking the greatest risks whilst penalising him if he fails – yet offering alternative routes for the less confident
