Life and work experiences have brought both Hazel and Steve to the point where they have the drive, skills and knowledge to provide a good quality home care service to people in the Plymouth area. They both have developed an understanding of the need for a holistic approach to care and that the families need support as well.Hazel Harris Managing Director BSc, RMAHazel Harris BSc (Hons) RMA, was raised in her early years by her grandparents who were Ukrainian WW2 refugees.

She learnt from a very early age the impact that communication barriers can have on people, particularly the elderly. Later in life she cared for Steve when he was diagnosed with oral cancer. During this time she realised that services were aimed at the patient and often support was not available for families unless you really shouted for it.This need for an holistic approach led her to become a home support volunteer for St Luke’s Hospice, the hospice inspired her to give help and support to the whole family and also gave her the inspiration to gain a degree in Health and Social Care Management. After graduating, Hazel worked for the Adult Team in Tavistock Social Services, supporting client’s who had mental health issues to remain in their own homes. It was there that she first got her passion for dementia care.Hazel then moved on to become the Day Hospice Manager for St Luke’s Hospice where she moved the service from Turnchapel to its current home at Pearn House. During this time she fought to make end of life support available to all and not only people with cancer. After applying for funding she was able to set up a day care service from St Lukes for older people in the Plymouth area who also needed support services.Hazel then moved on to pursue her Registered Manager’s Award and worked within a residential home in Kingsbridge. The client base was mainly dementia related. This is where she gained her many skills in working with dementia clients, and would also offer support to family and friends. Hazel then moved back to Plymouth and worked as the Registered Manager of Mayflower House. During this time she worked alongside a team of dedicated carers looking after dementia clients, and also gained Mayflower House the Dementia Kitemark Award. Steve Harris DirectorSteve was diagnosed with oral cancer in 1997 and spent a great deal of time in Derriford Hospital, there he saw how demanding nursing can be. He was lucky that he received good support and the professionals who supported him also inspired Steve. Steve is a volunteer support worker for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and attends annual conferences in London. He also supports patients either on the phone or via the internet.Steve decided to work in healthcare once fully recovered and joined Derriford Hospital as a General Support Assistant on the Medical Assessment Unit. He enjoyed his role but wanted to be more “hands on” so applied to be a Health Care Assistant on the same ward. He has dealt with many distressed patients and families, and has also gained a good insight into caring for patients with dementia.Steve then moved on and became a Physiotherapy Assistant, where he would assist patients to gain back their mobility skills.

After all the experience Hazel and Steve have gained, they then decided to start up H & H Healthcare Limited, so they could put all their good skills to use, and to enable clients to remain living independently in their own homes for as long as possible. With the current government drive to keep people in their own homes, we feel we will be very successful at promoting client’s rights, choices and independence. We also feel very strongly about supporting our team of staff, we want them to feel that they have support when needed, that they build good relationships with the clients to promote continuity and also that they are financially rewarded for all their hard work.Hazel and Steve have identified issues surrounding people going in to care, and the issues surrounding providing quality home care and after much research, decided to start up H & H Healthcare Limited. We are on facebook, please visit our page and “Like us” in order to keep up to date on all our information.
